How to solve the problem of material spillage in a bucket elevator

How to solve the problem of material spillage in a bucket elevator

2026-04-16

Bucket elevator is a key equipment for vertical transportation in industry. Material spillage is one of the most common and problematic operational faults. This not only leads to losses of raw materials and increased costs, but also causes dust in production premises, creates a safety hazard, and if ignored for a long time, accelerates equipment wear. In practice, many enterprises continue to operate with leaks, which only aggravates the problem. For an effective solution, it is necessary to systematically analyze the causes and take targeted measures.

Why does a bucket elevator often leak material?

In our many years of experience, material spillage in a bucket elevator is rarely caused by a single cause, but is more often the result of a combination of several factors, which can be divided into four main categories:

  1. Seal system failure (most common cause)

During long-term operation of a bucket elevator, seals at the junction of the housing, flanges, inspection hatches, inspection windows and shaft may wear out or weaken. Loss of elasticity of gaskets or insufficient tightening of bolts leads to the formation of gaps through which, under the influence of vacuum and vibration, dust and material gradually begin to escape.

  1. Problems with buckets and unloading

Buckets are the main working element that directly affects the tightness of the process. Their deformation, cracks or weakening of fastenings lead to disruption of the trajectory of the material. If the rotation speed is incorrect or the unloading shield is misaligned, a “backflow” effect occurs, in which the material does not have time to unload and returns down, accumulating at the base and causing an overflow.

  1. Mismatch between feed and operating mode

Often the cause is overfeeding of material. If the feed speed is too high or there are sudden load changes, the buckets do not have time to completely fill and transport the material, which leads to its scattering. Also, deviations in vertical installation cause runout and accelerated wear of the housing and seals.

  1. Design and Maintenance Flaws

A clogged discharge pipe, unstable operation of the aspiration system, or lack of regular maintenance can also lead to leaks. For example, when unloading is difficult, material begins to accumulate inside the housing and, under pressure, escapes through weak points in the structure.

How to quickly fix a leak problem?

If obvious leaks are detected, immediate action must be taken:

1、Immediately stop the equipment and check the housing, flanges and inspection hatches; Tighten all loose bolts, replace worn seals.

2、Check the condition of the buckets - if they are deformed or damaged, replace them; clear the interior of accumulated material.

3、Adjust the position of the discharge shield to ensure free flow of material and reduce backflow.

After troubleshooting, startup should be done at low speed with a gradual increase in feed after operation has stabilized.

How to prevent leaks on an ongoing basis?

The key to effective operation is prevention and a systematic approach:

1、Optimization of material supply

Ensure uniform and continuous flow without overload. If necessary, use buffer devices or frequency regulation.

2、Increasing the level of tightness

Use high-quality sealing materials and sealants at joints; use labyrinth or multi-circuit seals on the shaft.

3、Regular inspection of buckets and body

Conduct quarterly inspections of the condition of buckets, fastenings and vertical installation of equipment.

4、Ensure stable unloading and balance of the system

Avoid blockages in the discharge area and maintain optimal vacuum in the aspiration system.

5、Implementation of a planned maintenance system

Regular lubrication, tightening of connections, calibration and timely replacement of wear elements allow you to maintain the bucket elevator in stable operating condition.
